Epilepsy or Seizure Disorder


Seizures are caused by a sudden burst of electric activity in the brain. There are different type of seizures ranging from subtle absences up to life threatening tonic clonic movement (shaking) in which sudden stiffening and shaking of body associated with unresponsiveness. Every 1 in 200 child has epilepsy. More than two third of children can have a good control of their epilepsy with appropriate treatment.

Autistic Spectrum Disorder

Autistic child will have problems with social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, poor imagination and limited interest with some repetitive behaviour (mannerism). It’s a life long condition irrespective of the socioeconomic condition. A difference in the quality of life of the patient and the parents can be made with timely identification, a good understanding and multi-disciplinary professional approach.

ADHD (Attention Deficit & Hyperactive Child)

ADHD is a genetic condition in which the child suffers with the problems in attention, poor concentration, and hyperactivity and gets distracted very easily.

Cerebral Palsy

It is a group of conditions usually occurring during foetal development, before, during or after the childbirth affecting the posture & movement of a child. Children may have problems such as weakness, stiffness, slowness, shakiness and poor balance. It can be defined as a central motor dysfunction affecting muscle tone, posture and movement. It is commonly believed that CP is neither genetic nor a disease. Globally 1-2 children suffer from this condition in 1,000 live births. The major causes include-

Drug abuse, consumption of alcohol or smoking by mother at the time of pregnancy

» High blood pressure in mother, which can devour an unborn child of essential Oxygen supply

» Delivery done post-maturity

» Premature delivery

» Infection in mother at the time of birth or during pregnancy

» Lack of oxygen in the first few minutes after birth

Botox Injections are the treatment of choice for dynamic contracture and spasticity. It relaxes the stiff muscles and regains functionality with the help of rehabilitation program.

Dyspraxia or Coordination Disorder

Children with difficulty in planning and completion of fine motor tasks, low self esteem and generally look clumsy. If detected at early stage, almost normal potential of the child can be achieved.

Developmental Delay

If child does not achieve the different milestones at a particular age, needs full assessment to identify the areas of weakness and potential technique to improve upon.

Deafness or Speech Problems

If any child suffers from speech delay, please make sure his hearing is OK and then look for his behavior. Deafness and Autism are common causes of speech delay among others.

Headache

Contrary to our belief, headaches in children are very common involving up to 10% of them. Usually, they are benign, but they can be associated with migraine, tension, infection and brain tumour. Early morning or night-time headaches could be an indicator of an underlying brain disorder, should not be ignored.

Muscular Disorders

Muscular dystrophies and myopathies are common causes of delayed motor milestones, weakness, abnormal posture, abnormal walking. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the common one. It is a progressive condition and the child keep loosing his skills.

Stroke in Children

Stroke is the sudden disruption of the blood supply to a part of the brain causing a variety of symptoms depending upon the area involved. It can cause any of the following problems like weakness of one side of the face, legs, arms, poor speech, loss of consciousness, headache, etc.
